Can any one give me a summary of the book Little Women?
I want to know if I want to read this book or not.

The four March girls, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, are sad because their father has gone off to be a chaplain in the American Civil War. They resolve to make the best of things though, and the book describes various incidents in their lives during the year that their father is away. Some are funny, like their attempt at amateur theatricals, and the incident when Amy gets into trouble for taking pickled limes to school (forbidden by the teacher). Some are dramatic, like when Jo and Amy have a quarrel, and Amy goes off skating and nearly drowns. They get to know the rich boy next door, Laurie, and his gruff old grandfather, who develops an affection for Beth, and his young tutor Mr Brook, who develops a fondness for Meg. By the time their father returns from the war, Meg is engaged to John Brook, and Jo has learnt to be less of a tomboy and more of a help to her mother.
In the English edition, this is the end of ‘Little women’ the sequel ‘Good Wives’ is published seperately. However, I understand that in the USA they are generally published as one volume.
I find ‘Good Wives’ much less entertaining. Meg married John, Laurie proposes to Jo, is turned down, and subsequently marries Amy, Beth dies, and Jo marries a fat German professor. Most unsatisfactory, since everyone who reads the book naturally wants Jo to marry Laurie, if she is going to marry anyone.
