A diswasher’s woe: My arms break out everytime I use oven cleaner, is there any way to protect sensitive skin
I bought yellow gloves recently, and I just don’t know what to do about this. Is there any lotion or something that will help me through the forty five minutes I have to use that chemical?
This is a phenomenon that I have recently experienced. I tried to clean my oven with a name brand oven cleaning agent. I noticed that my arm was tingling a few moments later. As it turns out, I had tiny second degree burns on the areas of my arm where a bit of the oven cleaner had the opportunity to do its thing.
Oven cleaner is very caustic. It WILL burn your flesh OFF! Make sure you open the windows to allow for adequate ventilation because it can injury you lungs. If you breathe it in it can cause pneumonia. Wear the long yellow rubber gloves to protect your hands. Since oven cleaner is essentially lye (which is found in chemicals used to straighten hair) I have a suggestion that I learned from my hair dresser.
Petroleum Jelly (like Vaseline) will prevent the chemical burns that might occur. Before you clean the oven, apply petroleum jelly to the areas that could be potentially exposed. You will create a barrier between your skin and the chemical that will decrease injury.
