Can I convert my natural gas oven to LPG?
When I moved to France I brought my Rangemaster Classic 90 with me, knowing full well that I would need to swap the jets over to run on bottled gas. Inside the packet were the replacement jets for the ring burners but nothing for the main gas oven.The top now works fine and I was able to adjust the grill flame on the by-pass valve but the oven valve obviously needs replacing as the flame is way too high. The valve that needs to be replaced is a no.57. I tried to get information from the manufacturers but they insisted that I shouldn’t even have converted the top burners as the cooker as a whole was unsuitable for use with bottled gas. He was stumped for what to say when I pointed out that the cooker actually came with the set of jets required to convert it to LPG attached to the installation manual.(The manual which coincidentally gives a clear table and precise instructions on how to change the jets!) Any worthwhile advice gladly appreciated.
In general, fuel jets need to be smaller to run on propane, and the LPG jets that you installed up top presumably have smaller openings than the ones that were installed for natural gas. It is obvious that Rangemaster’s left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing — and that’s inexcusable. There are various possible sources for more information:
- Write to Rangemaster.
- Speak with the dealer who sold it.
- Speak with any dealer which repairs gas appliances.
As for the oven specifically, you shouldn’t need to replace the valve — just the gas orifice.
